The Work
Most tattoos have a single viewing angle. A sleeve has none. It wraps 360 degrees around a limb that moves, so the composition has to resolve from the front, the back, the inside of the arm, and every position in between. There's no dead side to hide the seams on.
That changes how it gets designed. The forms have to travel around the arm rather than sit on one face of it, the elbow and ditch have to be planned rather than worked around, and the shoulder cap has to connect cleanly in case the piece ever grows onto the chest or back. Terry designs every sleeve to be extendable, whether or not it ever gets extended. The other difference is time: a sleeve is a project, not an appointment — multiple sessions over months, on a schedule set before the first needle touches skin.
Scale
Shoulder to elbow, or elbow to wrist. A real project in its own right, and the most common starting point for people who want to see how they handle the process before committing to the whole arm. Designed so it can be continued later without looking like two tattoos that met in the middle.
Shoulder to wrist as one continuous composition. Typically 18–21 hours in color across a set of scheduled dates. This is where the design thinking pays off most — enough room for real scale, contrast, and flow.
Thigh to ankle, with the same logic as an arm and more surface to work with. The knee plays the role the elbow does, and the calf and shin read very differently in motion, so placement of the focal points matters more than people expect.
The Approach
Every sleeve follows the same sequence, refined over 25 years. It's designed to remove guesswork before the first session and to make sure the piece still reads decades from now.
Two to three hours with you in the room. Terry takes measurements, photographs the arm, does tracings, and develops the initial composition with you present — not behind a closed door. If you're travelling, this happens over Zoom or FaceTime. Come with clear ideas; the drawing that follows takes 3–6 hours or more.
The composition follows your muscle, joints, and movement so the piece wraps rather than sits. Existing tattoos, if you have them, are factored into the flow from the first sketch. The shoulder is planned as a connection point whether or not you ever use it.
Linework and shadow structure go down before any color or lighter values. That black base is what gives a sleeve its depth and lets it still read from across a room in 10, 20, and 30 years — not just on the day it's photographed.
A full color sleeve typically runs 18–21 hours across a set of dates booked together at the start. Your retainer secures all of them, and clients are billed only for time on skin.

Questions
A full sleeve in color typically takes 18–21 hours. That's usually a set of longer dates rather than many short ones — a full sleeve commonly runs six to seven appointments, a half sleeve three to four. All of your dates are arranged together at the start and secured by your retainer.
Terry's rate is $250 per hour, and clients are billed only for time on skin. A $500 non-refundable retainer secures your dates and comes off the total. Drawing time isn't billed separately; the retainer covers it.
It's a reasonable way in, and plenty of people do. The important part is saying so at the consultation, because a half sleeve designed as a half sleeve and a half sleeve designed as the first stage of a full one are different drawings. Told up front, it can be planned to continue cleanly.
Often, yes. Existing work gets factored into the composition from the first sketch, either incorporated or covered depending on what's there and how it's healed. Terry has been doing cover-ups for over 20 years, and roughly 30% of his client work involves covering or reworking existing tattoos.
Both work at sleeve scale. Most of Terry's work ends up in color, but that's client preference rather than his. Black & grey is simply another way of rendering, built on the same structural foundation either way.
No, but it's worth understanding the trade-off. A design that stops at the inner arm tends to read as unfinished from certain angles, and joining it later is harder than planning it whole from the start. If you want partial coverage, that's a design decision to make deliberately at the consultation.
Yes. Same approach, more surface. The knee functions the way the elbow does on an arm, and the calf reads very differently when you walk, so focal points get placed with movement in mind.
